Wisdom Teeth

In our late to teens to early 20s, our final group of teeth start to come through (“erupt”) into the mouth. These are our third molars – most commonly known as “wisdom teeth”.

While some people experience little to no problems with the growth and eruption of these teeth, commonly wisdom teeth may cause:

  • Pain and discomfort as they erupt
  • Gum inflammation, infection and disease
  • Difficulty with oral hygiene due to their position at the back of the mouth
  • Crowding
  • Problems for the teeth around them
  • Any of the above problems if impacted, as well as bone and root resorption

Commonly, wisdom teeth are considered extra and unnecessary teeth; so, it is likely that you will be recommended they be removed if they are not fully functional.
