During orthodontic treatment, we will be moving the teeth and bite into new positions. Once the ideal tooth and bite alignment has been achieved, it is imperative that we “maintain” (or “retain”) this result. In order to do so, we will recommend a retainer or a combination of retainers.
The most common retainers we recommend will be one or both of the following:
- A thin, comfortable and discrete wire that will be custom fitted and permanently attached to the back of your upper or lower 4-6 front teeth
- A custom-fitted clear plastic removable plate for your top or bottom teeth (like an Invisalign aligner, but made from a firmer material.
The most suitable form of retainer for you will be determined by Dr David Austin and recommended in your consultation.
